The biggest change, and the one I am most excited for, is when they begin to read. There is just so much excitement in them that they can recognize words and read sentences. Books that I have read to them, suddenly became brand new to them, simply because they could read the words on those worn pages. I love it!
During our usual bedtime routine in which I read Brooke a story or two in bed, she surprised me by sounding out the words ahead of what I was reading. I gave her the book, and figured she would only know words such as “and”, “is” “the” and maybe “to”. She ended up sounding out a few words, but getting the other one’s right. This is an early reader book, so it was mostly filled with rhyming words and 3 letter words, but boy oh boy, she read that book!
Then she read it to me every night for the next month. We’ve moved on to a few other early reader books and now she has read me about 5 books total. The girl loves to read, and I couldn’t be more proud.
Here she was reading to Luke, who lost interest on page 2, but that didn’t stop Brooke. She turned the pages and showed them to me, then told me: “I’m doing it just like a teacher!!”
so so so fun--and it makes you feel SO accomplished!
